Jesus in a bottle (Part 1)
Jesus in a Bottle (Part 1): Surrendering to the Real Jesus
Many people approach Jesus like a genie in a bottle—rubbing the lamp when they need something but ignoring Him otherwise. This mindset isn’t true faith; it’s a transactional relationship. Jesus doesn’t exist to fulfill our wishes—He calls us to surrender fully to Him.
The Crowd’s Response to Jesus in John 6
In John 6, we see four key events:
Jesus feeds 5,000 people – The crowd is amazed by His provision.
Jesus walks on water – His disciples witness His power over nature.
Jesus declares, "I am the Bread of Life" – He calls them to depend on Him, not just His miracles.
Many disciples leave when He says, "Eat my flesh and drink my blood" – His teachings are too hard for them to accept.
The crowd loved what Jesus did for them, but when He challenged their motives, they walked away. They wanted a King who would provide and overthrow Rome, but Jesus came for something greater—eternal life.
Why Do People Walk Away from Jesus?
The same reasons people left Jesus then still apply today:
They followed for what He could give, not for who He is.
They expected a Savior who fit their desires, not one who called them to surrender.
They liked the community and benefits of faith but weren’t truly committed.
They couldn’t accept hard teachings that challenged their way of life.
Jesus isn’t interested in half-hearted followers. He draws a line in the sand and asks: Are you truly committed, or just here for the blessings?
Surrendering to the Real Jesus
True discipleship means giving Jesus every part of our lives:
Our trust – Following Him even when we don’t understand.
Our time – Making Him our priority, not an afterthought.
Our relationships – Forgiving others and pursuing holiness.
Our comfort – Letting go of our desire for an easy life.
Our identity – Allowing Him to define who we are, not the world.
Jesus doesn’t just want to be our Savior; He wants to be our Lord. That means surrendering everything, not just asking for blessings.
Why Did the 12 Disciples Stay?
When most people left, Jesus asked the 12 disciples if they would leave too. Peter responded:
"Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." (John 6:68)
They stayed because:
They had truly experienced Jesus, not just His miracles.
They knew only He could offer eternal life.
They weren’t just following for personal gain—they knew He was the truth.
Final Reflection
Are you following Jesus for what He does or for who He is?
Is there any part of your life you haven’t fully surrendered to Him?
Are you willing to trust Him completely, even when it’s hard?
Jesus doesn’t call us to a comfortable, convenient faith—He calls us to full surrender. The question is: Will you stay or walk away?
